Benbulbben, Co Sligo

Standing tall above the lush, green County Sligo countryside is Ireland’s most distinctive mountain, the majestic Benbulben. Rising 517 metres from the valley below, its flat top may draw visual comparisons to Cape Town’s Table Mountain, but its history as a setting for several legends and mythical tales is entirely unique.

As you make your way up the mountain, you will pass glacial tracks, wide gullies and cool streams and see a variety of flora and fauna, with much of it being unique to the area. On reaching the summit, prepare to experience breathtaking views of the surrounding Wild Atlantic Way.

For literature buffs, you may also recognise that Benbulben features prominently in the poetry of W.B. Yeats, one of Ireland’s greatest ever wordsmiths, and a foremost figure of 20th-century literature.
